Evonik, Aquatic Plant Fertilizer, and Powder Coating Patio Furniture: A Scenario-Based Procurement Guide
There's no single right way to buy this stuff
I'm an office administrator for a 220-person specialty coatings company. I manage facilities and MRO ordering—roughly $180,000 annually across 14 vendors. I report to both operations and finance. We didn't have a formal approval chain for rush chemical orders. Cost us when an unauthorized hazmat fee showed up on an invoice—$340 that finance initially rejected. Now we have a one-page checklist: SDS on file, invoice terms confirmed, delivery window approved.
How to tell which scenario you're in
Ask four questions:
- How visible is the result? If a customer, auditor, or executive will see it, you're in Scenario B or C.
- What's the volume and frequency? One bag of aquatic plant fertilizer is Scenario A. A monthly chemical order for an Evonik chemical plant is Scenario C.
- What's the cost of failure? If failure means a $50 rework, Scenario A. If failure means a production shutdown or compliance fine, Scenario C.
