Evonik Procurement Questions, Answered by a Buyer Who Tracks Total Cost
I’m a procurement manager at a 115-person specialty coatings company. I’ve managed our raw-material budget of about $1.6 million per year for six years, negotiated contracts with 30+ chemical vendors, and documented every order in our cost tracking system. This article covers the Evonik-related questions I get from our purchasing team, our quality lab, and customers. It’s not a product pitch. It’s the checklist I use before approving a supplier.
What should an Evonik distributor prove before you buy?
There is no substitute for verifying distributor status. For me, an Evonik distributor is more than a warehouse with a website. It should appear on Evonik’s distributor locator, or be able to show a current authorization from Evonik. It should also provide a certificate of analysis, a clear lot number, and the current SDS. That requested set of documents is not red tape. Those three pieces are what allow us to trace a chemical back to the production batch.
I went back and forth between a discount broker and an authorized distributor for two weeks. The broker quoted 11% lower. The authorized distributor charged more, but their quote included lot traceability, documented storage conditions, and a return policy for off-spec material. I chose the distributor because our TCO spreadsheet said the broker route would add two to three days of quality checks per order. In a plant, time is a cost.
The vendor failure in July 2023 changed how I think about distributor verification. A drum lot that looked right came with a certificate of analysis that did not match the container mark. Nobody could prove the product had not been stored incorrectly. That one questionable order cost us more in quarantine time than the broker discount saved in a full year. Since then, our procurement policy requires quotes from three vendors minimum, and the first question is always traceability, not price.
What does 'Evonik Degussa MSDS' mean, and why do we use SDS now?
'Evonik Degussa MSDS' is a search phrase that makes sense if you’ve been in this industry for a while. Degussa was an established chemical company, and the name still appears in old technical datasheets even after Evonik was created. The document format also changed: MSDS became SDS, or Safety Data Sheet, under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard. Under 29 CFR 1910.1200, SDS sections follow a 16-section format.
When a supplier sends me a PDF titled 'Evonik Degussa MSDS', I don’t reject it automatically. But I do check three things: the product name matches the invoice, the revision date is current, and Section 16 lists the applicable GHS classification. An old MSDS is not necessarily dangerous. It is just not the right compliance document anymore.
In my opinion, buyers should not pay extra for an 'MSDS bundle'. The SDS should be available from the manufacturer’s product page or from a properly managed distributor portal. If a reseller offers a discounted price but cannot provide a current SDS without a phone call, that suggests their inventory system is not ready for a manufacturing customer. The hidden cost shows up later in EHS review, labeling, and emergency planning.
What is Resin MC?
The honest answer? It depends on the supplier. That is why short codes bother me more than prices do.
I’ve seen MC used for methyl cellulose, methacrylate copolymers, and monomer-cast nylon, but in other catalogs it can mean something else entirely. One code is not a specification. Even inside our own plant, different engineers use MC for different product groups. From a buying standpoint, 'Resin MC' should be a starting point, not the final description.
If you are sourcing an Evonik resin and someone refers to it only as Resin MC, ask for the full product name, order code, and technical data sheet. Then compare the viscosity, solids content, functionality, and glass transition temperature to the application requirement. I built a cost calculator after getting burned twice on shorthand product names. The cost of clarifying paperwork is small. The cost of buying a drum of the wrong resin is large.
How does the green methanol production process affect a coating buyer?
Green methanol production process questions are no longer limited to energy companies. Our customers ask about feedstock footprint, and methanol is used in many formulations and intermediates. The main production routes are biomass gasification and CO2 hydrogenation with renewable hydrogen. In the CO2 route, carbon dioxide reacts with hydrogen to make methanol over a copper-zinc oxide catalyst, then the crude methanol is distilled. The reaction is CO2 + 3H2 → CH3OH + H2O.
Why should a resin buyer care? Because green methanol has a cost structure based on renewable power, hydrogen, and certification. If a supplier says 'green' but cannot show a mass balance certificate or a carbon-intensity number, the green label is doing all the work. Per FTC Green Guides, environmental claims need to be substantiated. That is a good rule for chemical purchasing too.
In 2024, a quote for green methanol came in below our approved supplier’s price. The cheaper quote had no chain-of-custody documentation. We walked away. Our customers audit us, and a false sustainability claim on one coating component can ripple through their claims and ours.
Can you put UV resin on top of epoxy resin?
Yes, you can put UV resin on top of epoxy resin if the epoxy is fully cured and the surface has been prepared. I phrase it carefully because this is a classic case where cheap shortcuts cause delamination.
The epoxy surface should be washed to remove amine blush, then sanded with 220-320 grit or equivalent, cleaned with isopropyl alcohol, and allowed to dry. The sanded profile gives the UV resin something to grip. If the application is industrial, test on a small panel before running the full lot.
In 2022, a $3,000 test lot came back from our coating line with adhesion loss because someone skipped sanding. Worse than expected. The chemistry was fine; the process was the problem. I would rather spend two hours on an adhesion test than send a rejected batch to a customer.
One more thing: UV resin needs enough UV energy to cure through its full thickness. A thick layer over epoxy can cure on top and stay soft underneath. Multiple thin layers are safer than one thick pour.
