Evonik Chemicals and Specialty Purchasing: Three Routes, No Universal Answer

Ask three people in the same company how to order specialty chemicals and you'll get three different workflows. That isn't laziness. It's usually because they're answering three different questions that happen to look similar.

I'm the office administrator for a 45-person coatings and flooring-prep company. I handle purchasing for production materials and maintenance supplies, keep regulatory paperwork organized, and answer the occasional question that arrives between the two—roughly $230,000 in orders every year across eight active vendors. I report to operations and finance, so I see both sides: the technical side that wants the product to work and the paper side that wants the supplier to be legitimate.

Since I took over purchasing in 2021, I've learned that most chemical buying questions don't have a single correct answer. The answer branches. Once I identify which route the request is on, the decision becomes easier.

At my desk, almost every request lands in one of three routes:

  • Production material — a repeat order, like Evonik chemicals used in coatings or adhesives.
  • Fix-it or installation material — “we need something to dissolve epoxy resin,” or a request that names ultrabond adhesives for a flooring job.
  • Compliance question — for example, “what products have paraquat in them?”

Here's how I work through each one.

Route 1: Production material — direct with Evonik or through an Evonik distributor?

When a material is already on your bill of materials and you reorder it on a regular schedule, you aren't really comparing prices. You're choosing a supply channel. That choice depends on volume, on how much technical support you need, and on how much documentation your finance team expects.

The “buy direct from the manufacturer” habit that works for office supplies doesn't automatically hold for specialty chemicals. Direct isn't automatically better. It's better under specific conditions.

Buying directly from Evonik: when it makes sense

A direct account is worth the effort when you buy the same product all year, you have predictable forecasts, and you need direct conversations with the people who make the material. Direct relationships also simplify audits and product traceability, because the manufacturer stands behind the specification. Expect to sign up for volume commitments and forecast reviews. That's fine if your production schedule is stable; it's painful if you order once or twice a year.

Using an Evonik distributor: when it makes sense

Distributors exist to consolidate. They stock multiple manufacturers, handle smaller quantities, and often move faster on urgent orders. If you need one drum, a repack, or a mixed load, an authorized distributor can be the least painful option. They also absorb a lot of the transactional paperwork that doesn't make sense for a manufacturer to handle on a one-drum order.

I don't guess which resellers are authorized. Before I place a first order for Evonik chemicals with any new supplier, I confirm they appear in Evonik's official distributor search on evonik.com. That lookup takes about two minutes. More than once, it has flagged a vendor who could get the product but couldn't provide the manufacturer documentation we needed.

Check the reseller against Evonik's official distributor search (evonik.com, accessed January 2025). If you can't verify them there, ask for an authorization letter or contact Evonik's regional commercial team directly. No proof—no purchase order.

Route 2: Fix-it or installation — epoxy removers and adhesive selection

The sentence that used to make me open a product catalog too quickly is “we need something to dissolve epoxy resin.” It sounds like one SKU. It isn't. The answer branches, and the first branch is whether the epoxy has cured.

  • Uncured epoxy. If the resin hasn't crosslinked, you're dealing with a cleanup job. Use an appropriate solvent or resin cleaner before the material sets, then follow the SDS for disposal.
  • Cured epoxy. Once epoxy is fully cured, “dissolve” isn't quite the right word. The crosslinked plastic doesn't melt like a thermoplastic. You soften it, you apply heat if the substrate allows it, or you remove it mechanically. The right product depends on the surface under that epoxy.

That distinction sounds basic, but I got burned by the short version of this request in 2023. I said “we need something to dissolve epoxy resin,” and my supplier heard “send a general-purpose adhesive cleaner.” We were using the same words but meaning different things; we discovered that when the maintenance crew tried the product on cured residue and got nowhere. The job ran five days late. My fault for being vague, not theirs.

Ask four questions before you order an epoxy remover: Is the resin already crosslinked? What surface is it on? How thick is the residue? Can the crew use heat? The answers change the chemical selection and the method.

Permanent isn't always the right bonding goal

The same discipline applies when a request names an adhesive family. If someone sends over a request for a flooring project that references ultrabond adhesives, the product still has to be matched to the job. A high-strength, permanent bond is often the default, but “permanent” is not a feature. It's a constraint.

When a bonded panel will need to be removed later for service, a maximum-strength product can be the wrong answer. You don't want the strongest adhesive; you want the strongest adhesive that still allows a realistic disassembly path. The few jobs where I skipped this question ended with someone cutting a bonded part apart and asking me why the order didn't account for maintenance. Strong isn't always right. Right for the whole service life is right.

Route 3: Compliance — what products have paraquat in them?

The request I treat differently is “what products have paraquat in them?” That isn't a normal purchase request. It's a verification question. If someone is asking because they saw an ingredient name or a supplier claim, they need a method, not a memorized list.

Paraquat is not a hidden ingredient in coating resins, epoxy systems, or adhesives. It's a restricted-use herbicide. In industrial purchasing, it should not appear in a routine production order for specialty chemicals. If a request involves paraquat, the conversation moves straight into regulatory checks.

According to U.S. EPA (epa.gov, accessed January 2025), paraquat is classified as a restricted-use pesticide in the United States. Only certified applicators may purchase or use it. EPA has also required label and formulation changes to reduce accidental poisonings, including blue/green dye and an added vomiting agent in many products.

If someone asks which products contain paraquat, I don't answer with a brand list. Lists change, labels vary by country, and the same product name may be regulated differently in different regions. Instead, I use a four-point verification routine:

  1. Read the “Active Ingredient” statement on the label.
  2. Check for a “Restricted Use Pesticide” statement.
  3. Review Section 15 of the SDS for regulatory information.
  4. Confirm the EPA registration number or the equivalent national registration.

The same caution applies to vague marketing language. When a supplier calls something “green” or “non-toxic” without supporting documents, I ask them to substantiate it. An unproven claim is not a specification.

Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), environmental and safety claims should be truthful, not misleading, and supported by evidence. If a supplier can't show the basis for a claim, treat the claim as an opinion, not as a product requirement.

How to tell which route you're on

The trick is to classify before you search:

  1. If the material is already in your order history or bill of materials, you're on Route 1. Verify the supply channel before you worry about the price.
  2. If the request uses words like remove, clean, bond, install, or repair, you're on Route 2. Stop and collect application details first.
  3. If the request starts with “what's in this,” “is this allowed,” or “is this restricted,” you're on Route 3. Slow down and verify the regulatory status.

If a request crosses routes, use the stricter one. A new production adhesive is still a Route 2 decision if the bonded assembly will need service access later. The fact that it appears on a bill of materials doesn't remove the need to match the product to the application.
